Moving and Handling / Positioning

Moving and handling, often referred to as manual handling, involves using physical force to move, lift, push, or support objects or individuals. In the context of health and social care, this entails assisting individuals with various activities, such as transferring in and out of bed, bathing, using the restroom, walking and sitting.

Risk Assessment

A comprehensive risk assessment in health and social care is a cornerstone of safeguarding service users and staff. By meticulously evaluating potential hazards, care providers can proactively implement measures to mitigate risks and ensure a safe environment. Whether operating in residential settings or providing home-based care, it is imperative to conduct individualized risk assessments for each person receiving services.

Only competent staff should undertake risk assessments, ensuring that the process is thorough and accurate. These assessments should be completed prior to initiating care packages and subsequently updated whenever new risks are identified.

While some risks, like fire safety in care homes, are common, others are unique to individual service users. For instance, the risk of falling out of bed might be particularly relevant for certain individuals. By tailoring risk assessments to specific needs, care providers can effectively address potential hazards and promote a safe and supportive environment for all.
